Litter Picking

Would you like to borrow some litter picking equipment to use around Ely? It’s all free to our volunteers. We have regular litter pickers, then some extra long ones for getting hard to reach stuff – 6ft and 4ft, plus Bag Hoops to hold your bin bags, and packs of 10 bin bags & labels so you can leave your filled bags next to any council street bin. It’s all FREE to borrow because YOU, our lovely volunteers, helped us crowd fund it 🙏 Thank you so much!

Please send a message to Hayley Ellis with anything you’d like to use this weekend.

Bags & labels – collect from Collier Close, Lynn Road or Sycamore Lane at any time.

Pickers & Hoops – collect & return from Collier Close, message Hayley Ellis to arrange.

What we do:

  • We adopt areas/streets to look after Ely and villages nearby
  • We do solo litter picks or with support bubbles
  • You can borrow equipment for free and we provide bags and labels “not fly tipping”
  • We plan to have large litter picking events and socials post lockdown

Why Do People Litter? That’s the 100 million dollar question and the #1 question I get asked when I’m out picking up litter or running a litter picking event. Unfortunately the answer is…there doesn’t seem to be one recurring reason but littering seems to be a common theme throughout the UK. I wanted to share a really good article which was developed in 2019 by Dr Elaine Massung Off the Ground around the reasons why people litter. This Sunday, why not grab a cuppa and have a read.

Ely College Eco Schools

Ely College has now registered as an Eco School. Eco Schools is an organisation set up by Keep Britain Tidy, the charitable organisation is designed for students at schools across the UK so that the next generation know what they can do to protect the planet.

Eco Ely Committee member James Homent set up the project with help of the Eco Warriors, a student group at Ely College. The club consists of about 20 students already and is open for more to join. The project has seven steps: Eco Committee, Eco Review, Action Plan, Curriculum Links, Inform & Involve, Monitor & Evaluation and Eco-Code.

So far (January 2020) the club has completed the first step – forming an Eco Committee – and is currently working on the second step. The club members will go round in groups and complete an Environmental Review. Eco Warriors plan to have all 10 criteria assessed by the middle of February.

Every 3 – 4 steps that are completed earn a reward, a Bronze Medal first, then a Silver Medal, then a Green Flag.

Eco Ely Tree Planting

The Eco Ely Committee planted 500 trees on the 30th November 2019. The trees were planted at the underpass by the Ely Leisure Village. Amanda Halls and Lisa Robertson organised the whole event including tree funding and planting.

Amanda quotes: “We are extremely grateful from those planting and those who donated to the project.” The donations came from OVO, I dig scheme, Silver Oak Coffee & Barchams. Money is being raised through a GoGetFunding online fundraiser set up to buy small trees further down the cycle/footpath.

Another tree planting session is planned for Spring 2020 – if you would like to get involved go to the Eco Ely Facebook page and ask for details of the tree subgroup.
